Overview

The 4G LTE Motorola Atrix HD combines the fast speed of a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor with the thin, but strong, DuPont Kevlar fiber body. It has a large 4.5-inch HD ColorBoost display that gives you clear, sharp, and crisp images like you would expect to see on a tablet or HD TV. The Atrix runs on the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system and features SMARTACTIONS, a fully integrated, free app that intelligently automates everyday tasks and suggests ways to personalize your smartphone. Based on selections that you make, SMARTACTIONS will optimize your phone’s performance and extend your battery life. The phone also features a rear-facing 8 MP camera and a front-facing 1.3 MP camera.

Design

Available in modern white or titanium, it is stylishly thin at 0.3 inches. The scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass display provides further protection against bumps and bruises. The Motorola Atrix HD has a high-tech, invisible nanocoating that acts as a splash guard and shields against the unexpected splash not only on the outer shell, but on the electrical circuit boards inside.

SMARTACTIONS

The free SMARTACTIONS app intelligently automates everyday tasks and suggests ways to personalize your phone to make life easier. You can choose to accept the suggestion, which is based upon the time, place or situation. For example, if you are driving, SMARTACTIONS will suggest Drive Smart, which if selected, would set the phone to automatically launch the simple Vehicle View resulting in auto-reply to incoming calls and texts, enable hands-free conversations, and provide turn-by-turn navigation.
If you are in a meeting and don’t want to be disturbed, SMARTACTIONS will suggest the Meeting Rule, which is based on your calendar and location. Accept this, and your phone silences its ringer and activates auto-text reply, but also selectively lets pre-designated VIP callers through. The application can also improve battery life so it lasts longer between charges. For example, when your battery is running low, it can have your phone dim its display, turn off the GPS and disable background data.

Multimedia

The phone comes with a rear-facing 8 MP camera with 1080p video capture capabilities. In addition, the Atrix HD also has a 1.3 MP front-facing camera and 720HD camcorder for video chats. The 1080p HD video recorder films at 30 fps for smooth playback, just like the pros. With time-lapse video, you can even snap hi-res pics while shooting in HD. Connect an HDMI cable for “mirror mode,” to view your phone images or watch Google Play Movies in HD on the big screen. Or, use Google Play Music to listen to your music library and even songs on iTunes.

Vital Statistics

The Motorola Atrix HD measures 2.7 x 5.25 x .3 inches, weighs 4.9 ounces, and provides up to 9 hours of 4G talk time (8.5 days of standby time) with the 1780 mAh battery.

AT&T 4G Network

What is 4G?
4G is a wireless technology term meaning "Fourth Generation." 4G follows 3G as the latest addition to AT&T's mobile broadband network. When combined with enhanced backhaul, 4G means faster speeds, where data transfers take less time to complete. AT&T has upgraded the software of its nationwide mobile broadband network with HSPA+ which, with enhanced backhaul, enables speeds up to 4x faster than AT&T's already fast mobile broadband speeds. And now, AT&T is evolving to even faster 4G speeds with the launch of AT&T's 4G LTE technology in select markets.
Backhaul is one of the major pieces of a telecommunications network. Think of it as the limbs connecting AT&T's cell towers with AT&T's backbone network that provides access to the Internet.
How does AT&T 4G differ from other 4G networks?
AT&T is the only network offering two layers of 4G technology: HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul and LTE, both capable of delivering 4G speeds. Customers will have access to fast speeds as they move in and out of 4G LTE areas. Customers of competitors who do not have HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul are likely to see a steep drop-off in speeds when they move out of LTE areas.
In areas where either AT&T's 3G or 4G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways.

Optional AT&T Services

AT&T Navigator: This premium GPS navigation application includes audible turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic updates and re-routing options, and 3D moving maps (additional charges applicable). AT&T Navigator offers several other features to make your commute more enjoyable and reliable, including mobile access to Yellowpages.com. You'll be able to find the closes ATM, restaurant, gas station, Wi-Fi hotspot and more with over 10 million business listings.
AT&T FamilyMap: Locate any phone indoors or outdoors on the AT&T Network. FamilyMap provides peace of mind by being able to conveniently locate a family member from your wireless phone or PC and know that your family's information is secure and private. Want to verify that your child arrives home from school each day? Set up a Schedule Check to automatically get location information sent to you via text message or e-mail.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS

Android Ice Cream Sandwich Operating System

The Motorola Atrix HD runs the Android 4.0 operating system (dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich), which adds powerful new ways of communicating and sharing while improving on the best Android features: easy multitasking, rich notifications, customizable home screens, resizable widgets, and more.
The updated Ice Cream Sandwich interface features an onscreen navigation bar that replaces the hardware buttons for Back, Home, and Menu found with older Android-powered phones. And with Google+ integration, you can video chat with groups of up to 9 friends as well as easily upload and share photos and videos. Other features include:
Face Unlock
You can now unlock your phone with just your face using the Face Unlock option. It takes advantage of the front-facing camera and state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to register a face during setup and then to recognize it again when unlocking the device. Just hold your phone in front of your face to unlock (or use a backup PIN).
And the lock screen now lets you do more without unlocking. From the slide lock screen, you can jump directly to the camera for a picture or pull down the notifications window to check for messages. When listening to music, you can even manage music tracks and see album art.
Home Screen Folders
Quickly access related apps right from the home screen by organizing apps and shortcuts into folders--just drag one app onto another to create a folder.
Multitasking
Multitasking is even easier and more visual in Android 4.0. The Recent Apps button lets you jump instantly from one task to another using the list in the System Bar. The list pops up to show thumbnail images of apps used recently--tapping a thumbnail switches to the app.
Voice Input
The new voice engine in Android 4.0 lets you dictate the text you want, for as long as you want, using the language you want. You can speak continuously for a prolonged time, even pausing for intervals if needed, and dictate punctuation to create correct sentences. As the voice input engine enters text, it underlines possible dictation errors in gray. After dictating, you can tap the underlined words to quickly replace them from a list of suggestions.
Android 4.0 Features
  • Global roaming in 220 countries
  • Direct access from the lock screen to phone, camera, and text
  • New home screen layout with enhanced launch bar
  • Improved voice input: hold down the search key to dictate emails and text or navigate to an address
  • Face unlock: the device uses the front-facing camera to automatically recognize you when you attempt to unlock
  • Data usage: the new usage center allows you to monitor how much data is consumed each month
  • Google Play store for browsing and downloading thousands of free and paid apps
  • Pre-loaded Android apps: Browser, Calculator, Calendar (Google or Corporate), Camera, Clock, Contacts, Email, Gallery, Messaging, Music, News & Weather, Phone, Settings, Video Player, Voice Dialer, Voice Search, YouTube
  • Google applications: Gmail, Google Search, Google Voice Search, Google Latitude, Google Maps, Google Places, Google Talk
  • Google Maps Navigation with spoken turn-by-turn directions showing real-time traffic and 360° views of the destination

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone. Better than other phones in its price range., July 26, 2012
This review is from: Motorola Atrix HD Android Phone, Black (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
PROS: good call quality, fast responsive interface, excellent price, Android 4.0 OS, durable construction, pretty HD screen
CONS: non-removable battery, camera not so good in low light(even with flash on), uh...it's not free

I get a good discount on AT&T for being an LSU student, so I am sort of locked into AT&T. After scoping out the market at looking at my measly student budget, I decided that I would not pay more than $50 for a new phone. There are a few good AT&T smart phones out there for $50 or less such as the Nokia Lumia 900, Motorola Atrix HD, and LG Nitro HD which was free (at Best Buy's website with 2-year contract). The lowest price I found for the Lumia 900 was $19.99 and the Atrix HD was $49.99. I feel like all 3 of these phones are great for the money. Another phone that I liked for $49.99 was the Sony Xperia Ion, mostly because I love the look of it, but after doing further research I decided that the Sony was style over substance. Check the specs. It's... Read more
